"Gjuha" is the seventh track on The Last Dinner Party's debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy.

Background[]

Gjuha translates to 'Tongue' in Albanian and when the band performed at Green Man Festival 2023, Aurora Introduced the song by explaining that it’s about feeling ashamed about not knowing her mother tongue very well.[1]

Abigail Morris explained that the track came from the band wanting to do an aria as an interlude, and at first they started to write a thing on piano and guitar and Aurora Nishevci had a saxophone. At some point Aurora told the band about an Albanian folk song it reminded her of.[2]

We’d been talking about her singing a song in Albanian for the album. She went away and came back with this beautiful, heart-wrenching piece. It’s about her feeling this pain and guilt of coming from a country, and a family who speak Albanian and are from Kosovo, but being raised in London and not speaking that language. She speaks about it so well.
―Abigail Morris for Apple Music

Composition[]

It’s mostly sung by Aurora Nishevci, with the rest of the band joining in throughout before seamlessly transitioning into their song "Sinner".[3]
