"Mandinka" is a song by Sinéad O'Connor from her 1987 album "Lion and the Copra", covered by The Last Dinner Party for Apple Music's London Sessions.

Background[]

The song was part of a new monthly series hosted by the streamer Apple Music, where artists perform live renditions of some of their own songs as well as a cover.[1]

Abigail Morris described 'Mandinka' as "really challenging" to sing,

Her pipes, man. It was really hard. So it was a real, real beast, really intimidating, but it was really fun, it was really freeing and yeah, it’s a wonderful song.
―Abigail Morris in an interview with Apple Music

The band decided to cover the song after their manager suggested it to them:[2]

Another reason why we did it is our manager, Tara, is an Irish woman and she suggested that we do it, so we dedicate it to her; this one is for Tara.

Lyrics[]

I'm dancing the seven veils
Want you to pick up my scarf
See how the black moon fades
Soon I can give you my heart

Ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh

I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't see the flame
But I do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I do

They're throwing it all this way
Dragging it back to the start
"See how the glass is raised?"
I have refused to take part
I told them, "Drink something new"
Please let me pull something through

I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't
I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't see the flame

But I do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I said i do
I do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I said i do know Mandinka
I do know Mandinka
I said i do
I said i do
I said i do
