"The Feminine Urge" is the fourth song on The Last Dinner Party's debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy.

Background[]

When performing the song at MOTH Club on November 15, 2022, they introduced it by explaining that it's about being a woman.[1] They have since explained further that it’s about feminine rage.[2]

On November 23, 2022, the band posted a picture to their instagram with lyrics to the song written on it with the caption "album affirmations 🏹", alluding to it’s release on their debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy.[3]

The beginning of The Feminine Urge was based on an unreleased song by Lana Del Rey called "Driving in Cars With Boys". Abigail Morris wanted to write about her mother and the "mother wound", she explained to Apple Music:[4]

It’s about the relationship between mothers and daughters and how those go back over generations, and the shared traumas that come down. I think you get to a certain age as a woman where your mother suddenly becomes another woman, rather than being your mum. You turn 23 and you’re having lunch and it’s like, ‘Oh shit, we’re just two women who are living life together,’ and it’s very beautiful and very sweet and also very confronting. It’s the sudden realization of the mortality and fallibility of your mother that you don’t get when you’re a child. It’s also wondering, ‘If I have a daughter, what kind of mother would I be? Is it ethical to bring a child into a world like this? And what wound would I maybe pass on to her or not?’
―Abigail Morris for Apple Music
