The Last Dinner Party (formerly known as The Dinner Party) is a indie-rock band formed in 2020 In Brixton, London.

Background[]

2020-2021: Beginnings[]

Georgia Davies and Lizzie Mayland met Abigail Morris at freshers week in uni[1] where they all became friends.[2] They bonded by frequenting The Windmill in London watching the bands play, which inspired them to create a band themselves.[3]

Morris met Emily Roberts through a mutual friend who had recommended her as the best guitarist he knew. Roberts In turn brought in Aurora Nishevci[4] who she knew from attending the same school together[3] and working with her on a different project,[5] together they would create "The Dinner Party" in March of 2020.[6]

For a year the band struggled to find time to rehearse together because of the COVID-19 lockdown in the UK, but instead of performing their first gig immediately they decided to wait until people could stand up together.[7] The band took their time and rehearsed whenever they got the chance, honing their sound[8] before performing their first gig at The George Tavern in November of 2021.

2022-2024: Getting signed and releasing music[]

Even though they hadn’t performed for long the band had already started to gain a reputation around the London live circuit and Lou Smith had wanted to see this new band since he heard they were a thing.[9] On February 10, 2022, he noticed he was nearby the venue they were playing at,[10] so he went there to film them at their fourth ever gig, and the next day he posted the video of their full set to his YouTube channel.[11] The video gained a lot of attention and after the video was uploaded the band received emails from labels, managers and PRs.[3]

The band's stature in the local scene had grown and they started to gain traction in the industry. Q Prime's Tara Richardson received four demos from an audio engineer the band had worked with in the studio that she thought was very impressive, so in early 2022 she went to see the band play live and almost immediately, she signed them to the management firm.[12] By May of 2022 the band had signed a record deal with Island Records.

The band continued to perform live throughout 2022, testing out their music in pubs and small venues around London, where they began to gain a fan base.[12] After getting signed to a booking agent[13] the band was offered to open for The Rolling Stones at BST Hyde Park on July 3, 2022, something the festival does to highlight new and upcoming bands.[4]

By the start of 2023 with a team in place and a new name, the group prepared to officially launch their recording career, and on April 19, 2023 they released their debut single Nothing Matters.[12] The song, produced by James Ford, was praised by critics and entered Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart at #39. It later climbed into the Top 10, becoming a significant radio hit.

The band released three more singles in 2023, Sinner, My Lady of Mercy & On Your Side, and one last single in January of 2024, Caesar on a TV Screen, before releasing their highly anticipated debut album on February 2, 2024, Prelude to Ecstasy. The album was very well received, and became number one on BBCs official charts.[14]

Name[]

When they first created the band they wanted the name to be "The Dinner Party" which was inspired by the idea of a huge debauched dinner party where people came together to celebrate with a hedonistic banquet.[3] In January of 2023 they announced on their socials that they would change the name to "The Last Dinner Party"[15] to avoid confusion with Kamasi Washington’s "Dinner Party" project.[16]

When Andy Von Pip of Under The Radar magazine suggested the addition of "The Last" added a more deeper and more evocative image, "conjuring up a sense of doomed grandeur and faded sepia-tinged glamour", Georgia and Abigail agreed.[3]
